Masumi Narita has spent decades making ceramics in Mashiko, one of Japan’s historic pottery towns. His practice is deeply experimental, shaped less by the pursuit of a fixed result than by a continuous process of making, observing and adjusting.
Working with Mashiko clay and exploring the effects of glaze, iron, atmosphere and fire, Narita allows subtle variations in the kiln to become part of the finished work. His forms are remarkably light and refined – a quiet departure from the heavier more rustic character traditionally associated with Mashiko ware.
